Arup were delighted to host a discussion on Low Carbon Opportunities at the Eircom HQ Building on 3rd March 2010. Key speakers from both the UK and Ireland provided an insight into the most recent legislative requirements associated with the carbon economy; emerging technologies and best practice examples adopted by London Sustainable Development Commission; carbon measurement, labelling and reduction techniques, as well as information on conducting business in Ireland in a low carbon economy.We would like to thank our guest speakers, Tom Flynn, Malcolm Ball, Keith Evans and Declan White for their involvement and assistance in making this such an informative discussion and open debate.A tour of the Eircom building, winner of the SEI Award for Sustainable Building Excellence 2009, was provided after the discussion.More information on this event and a copy of the presentations can be obtained from here. Shaping Cities of the Future - Evening Lecture

Arup were delighted to host an evening lecture by Peter Head, OBE in our offices on Thursday November 26th. The event was very well attended by a broad range of clients and colleagues in the industry.Peter Head is the global leader of the Arup planning group with comprises over 800 staff. His particular area of expertise is sustainability. He is the Arup project director for the planning and development of the Dongtan Eco-City in Shanghai and the Wanzhuang Eco-City near Beijing. Peter was appointed by Ken Livingstone as an Independent Commissioner on the London Sustainable Development Commission. Eircom HQ wins Sustainable Building Excellence Award 2009

The Eircom HQ building provides accommodation for over 1500 people working in diverse areas of the business including call centres, project teams, accounts, engineering and IT services as part of Eircom's role as Ireland's leading land line service provider.The building comprises 7 storeys over basement with a 10 storey tower at the northeast end and an associated Gross Floor Area of 20,000m². The holistic design of architecture and engineering has produced a mixed mode ventilation scheme with a triple glazed façade incorporating internal solar shading. The triple glazed façade provides noise protection on the busy St John's Road while reducing solar gains and providing draught free ventilation. The structure consists of an exposed insitu concrete frame and coffer slabs, with embedded coils at top level.The systems in the building are fully integrated to allow the building to operate successfully without the need for full air conditioning. Taihu New City, Wuxi, China - Signing Ceremony in Dublin.

Arup’s Planning Team was recently commissioned by the Wuxi Taihu New City Construction Headquarter Office to provide planning and sustainability/ ecological consultancy services for the Taihu New City Plan within Wuxi city in Jiangsu Province, China.Wuxi city is one of the richest cities in the Yangtze River Delta Region. The project is located in the southern part of Wuxi City along the northern edge of Lake Taihu. It is one of the key strategic areas for Wuxi city’s growth and development as well as being a critical area for ecological conservation and improvements within the broader Lake Taihu Region. On the 22nd October, Arup welcomed the Wuxi City’s Party Secretary, Yang Wei-Ze and his delegation including our client to Dublin, Ireland. Arup shortlisted for Engineers Ireland CPD Company of the Year

For the second year running, Arup has been shortlisted for Engineers Ireland Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Company of the Year Award. This year's Arup submission is based on our Learning & Development (L&D) programme which is being implemented to broaden and enhance the key internal skills of our staff in the management, technical and legal areas. Internal trainers were trained using a ‘Train the Trainer' programme to deliver in-house workshops and lectures. By maximising in-house training opportunities we have utilised the knowledge and experience of our senior staff, allowing savings on our annual L&D budget without reducing the amount of quality CPD available to all staff. Spencer Dock Bridge wins Leaf Award

Arup is proud to announce that the new Spencer Dock Bridge in the Dublin docklands has won the Best Structural Design prize at a Leaf (Leading European Archi­tects Forum) awards ceremony in Berlin. The awards are given to those who "have made an out­standing contribution to the world of architectural design" and for buildings that set benchmarks.Arup provided concept and detailed design as well as contract technical support on the 40m-long Spencer Dock Bridge, designed by Amanda Levete Architects.The Spencer Dock Bridge will carry the LUAS across Spencer Dock / the Royal Canal. The bridge has been designed in such a way as to enable Spencer Dock to be restored to its original width and to allow the construction of an urban Linear park on either side of the canal bank.The bridge comprises of a two span post-tensioned deck which is unique in terms of its geometrically undulating soffit forming a doubly curved surface. Arup's Quality Certification has been upgraded following a recent external audit Arup's Quality Management System is certified agsinst the ISO 9001 Standard. This system is fully integrated into our day-to-day activities and is an invaluable tool in the success of our organisation. We are independently audited bi-annually by an EU accredited Certification Authority, with our last audit taking place in April 2009. Wexford Opera House Wins Another Award

Wexford Opera House, already the winner of RIBA and OPUS, has won a prestigious Royal Irish Architects Institute Award. The theatre was designed by Keith Williams Architects and the Office of Public Works.Arup Consulting Engineers were appointed to provide acoustic and structural design for the Opera House, which is home to the world famous Wexford Opera Festival.Facilities in the 7000m² theatre include a 750 seat state-of-the-art auditorium specifically designed for opera and a 150 seat smaller space used for music, drama, rehearsals and cinema. Arup has been re-accredited by Engineers Ireland for our CPD programme. Following a visit by the Engineers Ireland Accreditation Panel and subsequent approval by their CPD Standing Committee, we are very pleased to have our accreditation extended for a further 3 years.
