Swords Pavilions is the development of a shopping centre into a proposed mixed use town centre development. As part of Arup's work on this development, the GIS team customised their Multi Modal Transport Accessibility GIS Model to explore the accessibility of the development to pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and those wishing to avail of public transport.
Contrasting the traditional method of measuring accessibility by road distance, the GIS model also took into consideration public transport as a means of access, rather than a facility to be accessed. The model calculated how accessible the shopping centre was using public transport within a 60minute time frame. These public transport calculations were based on timetable information and walk times to the nearest public transport stop with wait time between modes of transport included in the calculation. Calculations were also undertaken for walk, cycle and drive time scenarios.
