Architect: O Sullivan, Campbell
Arup Scope: Design of Mechanical & Electrical Services
Arup were engaged by Kerry County Council to design the Mechanical & Electrical services using energy efficient methods.
Castleisland Area Services Centre in Co. Kerry consists of a public library, multi-purpose meeting room and County Council branch offices.
Based on the results of the 2003 Energy design study, a number of energy saving measures were applied in order to reduce running costs and CO2 emissions of the building footprint.
The building fabric performance was improved by increasing the thickness of the thermal insulation. A ground source heat pump extracts low temperature heat from a nearby well and converts it to a higher temperature for use in an under floor heating system. The heat pump is backed up by an LPG gas fired boiler which leads to reduced carbon emissions, lower maintenance costs and greater efficiencies in comparison to an oil fired boiler.
The building is naturally ventilated utilizing single sided ventilation. The electrical installation also incorporates energy saving measures including energy efficient lighting and presence detection sensors that automatically switch the lights off when no movement is detected.
