Carlow Arts Centre, Carlow
Client: Carlow County Council
Architect: Terry Pawson Architects
Arup Scope: detailed design, tendering and supervision on site of Mechanical, Electrical, Structural and Civil Engineering elements of the building. Arup was also responsible for Fire Engineering.
The recently completed Carlow Arts centre located in the grounds of St. Patrick's College in Carlow consists of a glass clad arts building comprising a 353 seat theatre and stage area, 5 room art gallery with public and administrative support accommodation including a restaurant , catering facilities and associated stores and workshop areas.
The theatre is fully fitted out to cater for travelling drama schools and comprises fixed lighting bridges and a high level rolling bridge in the Precenium area above the stage.
As with most galleries visibility of services was to be kept to a minimum thus maximising wall and floor areas for display purposes. Careful consideration was given to the acoustic and visual performance of the mechanical and lighting systems. Sustainable features including solar water heating which satisfies a large percentage of the buildings hot water demand were also included.
It is envisaged that the centre will play a significant role in the future cultural, social and economic development of Co. Carlow
