The Commissioners of Irish Lights
Client: The Commissioners of Irish Lights
Architect: Scott Tallon Walker
Arup Scope: Structural, Civil, Façade, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Services
The drum shaped 3 storey structure features a fully glazed triple skin façade, ‘sea water’ chilled precast concrete coffered floor slabs supported on curved steel box sections.
The most significant structural feature of the building is the helical steel staircase which winds upwards from the ground to the second floor giving the impression of anchoring the structure to the ground. The building has a feeling of lightness as the open plan office layout combined with the glazing allows the viewer to admire the views out to sea.
The office buildings’ main sustainable feature lies in its heating and cooling systems that are imbedded into the concrete floor structure. The buildings are highly dependant upon the adjacent sea for both their heating and cooling.
Through close integration between the architecture, structural frame, external cladding and mechanical and electrical services; a high quality working environment with minimum energy use and impact upon its surrounding environment has been created.
