Geographical Information Systems
With the development of Arup into even greater areas of infrastructural planning and design, new tools to assist us are required. The use of Geographical Information System (GIS) is one of these.
What is GIS?
GIS is a computer-based information system which captures, stores, manipulates, analyses and displays spatially referenced and associated tabular attribute data, allowing you to solve complex research, planning and management problems.
GIS applications allow users to analyse and model their project data using location as a common denominator. This powerful tool allows you to create real world models without leaving your desk. These models allow you to analyse spatial information, edit maps & data, and present the results of all these operations in a variety of formats.
Arup has approximately 80 GIS experts located in offices worldwide including the Irish GIS team working from our Dublin office. The GIS team support a wide range of areas including:
- Multi Modal Transport Accessibility Modelling
Arup Ireland has developed a Public Transport model for the Greater Dublin Area. This model incorporates timetable information and calculates areas accessible within a certain timeframe or distance including time or distance to walk between the stations/ stops. - GIS Consultancy
The Arup GIS team are experienced in all aspects of GIS consultancy from collecting user requirements, sourcing spatial data and manipulation, GIS analysis and modelling techniques, through to documenting, reporting and presenting results. - GIS Training and Support
Customised training can be provided on applications and on going support provided.
The GIS team works closely with colleagues from all sections within Arup to identify opportunities were GIS can be utilised.
