Spencer Dock Bridge wins Leaf Award
Arup is proud to announce that the new Spencer Dock Bridge in the Dublin docklands has won the Best Structural Design prize at the Leaf 2009 (Leading European Architects Forum) awards ceremony in Berlin. The awards are given to those who "have made an outstanding contribution to the world of architectural design" and for buildings that set benchmarks.
Arup undertook concept, scheme and detailed design as well as contract technical support on the 40m-long Spencer Dock canal bridge, in partnership with Amanda Levete Architects and on behalf of the Railway Procurement Agency.
The Spencer Dock Bridge will carry the LUAS C1 Red Line across Spencer Dock / the Royal Canal towards the O2 Arena. The bridge has been designed in such a way as to enable Spencer Dock to be restored to its original width and to allow the construction of an Urban Linear park on either side of the canal bank.
The bridge comprises a two span post-tensioned concrete deck which is unique in terms of its geometrically undulating soffit based on the geometry of a Manta Ray.
